I'm not sure why this book received so many good reviews. I didn't think it was very good or interesting. The story line was not believable at all.. four generations of women up and decide to leave their life of luxury in one day and all move to Oklahoma together. Two of them fall in love within 2 weeks - how often does that happen in real life? Too many women to keep track of, the story was all over the place. Poor grammar used throughout the book made the characters less believable. I'm having a difficult time finishing this book due to the silly story that is totally unbelievable.
Carolyn Brown is one of my all time top ten favorite authors. When you read one of her books you'll not be able to put it down. Her characters are always so believable. She writes about things that you can relate too, always. These stories might not be your every day Cinderella type stories like most romances out there on the shelves today. But....I can guarantee you that they will always be about the more believable type situations, situations that most of us can relate to in the real world.What I like the most about her books, is that her stories always seem to have very strong willed women. Women who don't let any man what-so-ever, run rim shot over them no matter how macho those men might be. That doesn't mean there isn't some really hot romances going on in her stories, because there is always a very hot steamy romance going on in every one of her stories, always!In this book starts our with four generations of women, heading out together on a journey that will end up changing all of their lives in one way or another.. All of them for one reason or another, are all far from being happy. Sure...they might be going through the motions of everyday life, but none of them are really living. Each and every one of them is hiding there own personal secrets from all the other family members.Hannah is the 80 year old monarch of the family, who owns a whole chain of up scale hotels and B&B's. One day she is notified that her cousin & best friend, Norma has suddenly died and left her everything she owned in a small town in Oklahoma. Among those many possessions Norma had left to Hannah, is a farm that had been in Norma's family for many, many generations. It was also where she'd first met Norma, and where her own hidden secret began. Norma & Hannah both only seventeen at the time the first time they had met, but they had become fast friends from that day on. Even though they were only together for a few short weeks, they formed a bond so strong that nothing or no one could ever breach their friendship. And even though they never got together again after that summer, they kept each others secrets. For more than sixty plus years they stayed in touch by both writing each other weekly letters, and by calling each other on the phone every Sunday night, religiously.Hannah's daughter, Karen who was close to her sixtieth birthday at the time, had just filed her final divorce papers with her lying, cheating, no good SOB of a husband of forty years. Everyone is shocked by the news, but no one is willing to let Hannah face all of this on her own. So...they all put own lives and troubles on hold, and they head out for Oklahoma together.Norma had two very close friends, both of which also happened to be her next door neighbors. John who was about forty five years old, lived on the south side of her property, and Luke a twenty-five year old man lived on the north side. Both of these guys looked after and protected Norma, like she was their own mother. They ate together, played board games together at night, and made sure she was always well taken care of. They also knew all about Hannah and her family, because Norma spoke about them all the time. They also figured these spoiled rich city women would come there and sell everything Norma owned, and then they'd leave and head back to the big city and all their riches again..But things didn't quite turn out the way these guys had figured it would, far from it in fact.Would I recommend this book? YES!!!! I most certainly would, in a heartbeat in fact.
I recommend this book for any woman aged 13 to 95 who has, has had, or who plans to have, a relationship with any other woman in her family. Hidden Secrets is filled with humor based on truth. Four generations of Brewster women set out for a farm in Oklahoma that only one of them, the great-grandmother, knows anything about. The others are just along for the ride, or so they think. Each woman, in her own way, has demons to fight and lessons to learn, and the produce farm in Oklahoma turns out to be just what they need to “let go,†and learn those lessons.As their secrets slowly emerge and they begin to learn just how much love and trust actually exists among them, we get to watch and pull for them to succeed. I won’t tell you that they all do succeed. You’ll have to read the book and find out. You may think this isn’t your kind of book, that you don’t read family dramas. Give this book a chance. I don’t really care for the genre myself, but this one is a keeper!
I am quickly becoming a Carolyn Brown fan! This is the second book I have read by her and I think I enjoyed it more than the first one. The story is a four women who move from the only life they've known to a small town in Oklahoma. They are wealthy and have never had to really work. The story centers around Hannah, the great-grandmother, Karen, the grandmother, Sue, the mother and Kim the daughter. Hannah's cousin Norma passes away and leaves Hannah the farm. Hannah decides to leave everything she's known in Morgantown West Virginia and drive to Oklahoma to begin a new life. as each other lady decides to go with her we find out they all have secrets about their past that they are trying to run away from. Life in Oklahoma is definitely different than the rich life of Hotel ownership in Morgantown West Virginia! Along with two cute Neighbors, John and Luke, the ladies discovered that hard work and small town living can bring peace and happiness. And A Little Romance... I really enjoy the way Carolyn Brown brings real life to her stories. For a great escape and a book that will leave you smiling with a few giggles along the way, read hidden secrets. You will definitely be glad you did!
I gave this three stars because the characters were likable and the story was sweet. However, the situations in the book were just too unbelievable. The whole family just picks up and moves on a day's notice. They are used to living a wealthy life and now are happy on a farm in Oklahoma. The way they speak changes overnight to include every country saying that the author could come up with. I have relatives in Oklahoma and they don't talk this way. I mean really, "Meaner than a skunk caught up a tree". Okay, that wasn't in the book but similar things. Some of the sayings didn't even make sense. Also, SPOILER ALERT...two of the four women are engaged within a couple of months to men they just met there. The roadside vegetable stand made the previous owner a millionaire. Uh, I don't think so. I almost put the book down several times because of the silliness in the plot. I have read many Carolyn Brown books years ago so maybe my tastes have changed. I just guess I need a bit more realism to go along with a nice plot and likeable characters.
