The bloodiest battle in American history earned its name from the war correspondents who were covering the conflict. The "bulge" was a protuberance 50 miles wide and 70 miles deep in the American lines. The Germans, who had been in flight from the American invasion of Normandy, were not supposed to be in the Ardennes region, with its terrain deemed too difficult for tanks to move or soldiers to fight. That deadly assumption left the Ardennes and the town of Bastogne insufficiently defended by 80,000 American soldiers, most of whom had minimal battle experience. Attacking them were more than 400,000 well-armed German troops, many of whom had earned their fighting experience on the deadly Eastern Front.Â
Inside, you will hear about:
After the Normandy Invasion
The Siege of Bastogne
The German infiltration
Nuts!
Old blood and guts
The last major German offensive
And much more!
Trapped and surrounded by the Germans, the besieged Americans seemed doomed. But a daring action by General Patton would break through the German lines and end the siege of Bastogne, bringing supplies and reinforcements that would allow the Americans to prove their mettle at the largest battle fought on the Western Front in Europe.

I realize a "brief" history can't be thorough, but I found this history to be very disjointed. It skips around in time, losing any feel for the sequence of events, plus it repeats points already covered (as often as 3-4 times!). It does, however, do a good job of highlighting the background conflicts between US and British generals as well as the errors of judgment by the in Allied Supreme Command that created the opportunity for the German counter-attack.
Another succinct look at a vital component of WWII from Hourly History. It's a wonder it was ultimately successful considering the relationships between the Allies' commanders ;-)Another war that achieved absolutely nothing apart from a major financial burden, plus untold: misery, death and destruction!
The title of this book leads one to.believe that more than Bas togne would.be covered. It seems to me that high profile and Patton coming to.the rescue helps the hype. The reason the Allies won was because of the men, who fought at Elsinborne Ridge and the Hurtgen Forest. My father was there and to!d me the stories.Bedtime was important but it was not the entire Battle of the Bulge.
Excellent details of information not ready available from other sources.
An in depth account of one of the fiercest battles in WWII.
A brief, fast moving account of the battle which still managed to provide a feel of personalities and passions involved. A good quick read.
This book's target audience is really grade schoolers. Historians and buffs, skip this one.
This was a pretty slim outline of the battle. There as very little to illuminate the full errors of the Allies or the major objectives of Germany. One reference to Patton was interesting; his absence earlier on in the invasion was not to lead the fictious army the Allies pretended to build in England (though that was the objective of thar effort) but because of his highly controversial slapping the prior summer of a soldier with PTSD whom Patton considered a coward. Weak effort and not really worth the time. Wikipedia would be more valuable.
