If you want to quickly get up and running with some fun projects for the Arduino, this is a good resource. To do all of the projects contained in the book, you might need to put forward a little bit of cash; the book covers many cool sensors and actuators. If you want to do all of your shopping at once for the whole book, there is a handy list of all required components at the beginning. Each project also has its own list of required materials, making it easy to pick and choose your projects as well. The projects start with your typical “Make an LED blinkâ€, the “Hello World†of Arduino, and steadily build up to much cooler projects that are honestly engaging. As a high school teacher, I am excited to work on many of these with my students. The projects are organized nicely by topic as well: LEDs, Servos, LCDs, Numeric Counters, Security, and Advanced. You’ll build projects that use IR remotes, a moisture sensor, speakers, a humidity and temperature sensor, lasers, a variety of LCD screens, etc. The directions for wiring up your project are clear and the source code is provided. If you actually want to make any of these specific projects, then this is a great book. Here is the full list of projects:LEDs1. Pushbutton-controlled LED2. Light Dimmer3. Bar Graph4. Disco Strobe Light5. Plant Monitor6. Ghost DetectorSound7. Arduino Melody8. Memory Game9. Secret Knock LockServos10. Joystick-controlled Laser11. Remote Control ServoLCDs12. LCD Screen Writer13. Weather Station14. Fortune Teller15. Reaction Timer GameNumeric Counters16. Electronic Die17. Rocket LauncherSecurity18. Intruder Sensor19. Laser Trip Wire Alarm (sic)20. Sentry Gun21. Motion Sensor Alarm22. Keypad Entry System23. Wireless ID Card Entry SystemAdvanced24. Rainbow Light Show25. Build Your Own Arduino! The downside of this book is that it does precious little to actually explain things. As an example, one of the projects uses a shift register to control a seven-segment display. While all of the directions are there for how to wire up the shift register, including a very brief description of the pinout and how to find pin 1, there is almost no discussion as to why the shift register is used and there is no attempt to explain how a shift register works. This is fine if you want to get the seven-segment display to work in this project, but it doesn’t help you use a shift register for any other project. As a teacher, I would enjoy a bit more time spent explaining things. Granted, the internet hosts a wide array of resources that can do precisely that, but the internet also hosts a wide array of resources with sample projects as well (though, seriously, not as cool as these projects). Though not a deal breaker, the lack of explanations and depth on any topic make this a 4-star item for me. Every project is clearly laid out but there is little here to help you create and design your own projects (other than trying to directly copy whole chunks of wiring diagrams). The other downside to this book is the code. There is very little in the way of explaining the source code and there are definitely sections that made me cringe (note that I teach programming and these moments were brought on by stylistic concerns). The provided code works, but you might have a hard time writing code for your own projects if you are new to programming. I am guessing that this compromise was made to keep the book moving at a quick pace and the projects more accessible to a non-programming crowd. In this regard, it succeeds. The bottom line: if these projects sound like fun, then this is a great book (and the projects are actually very cool)! Buy it now! However, this book doesn’t do much to provide the general background knowledge or understanding that will help you design your own, novel creations. Instead, it is a cookbook with a bunch of tasty recipes.NOTE FROM LEANNE: This review was written by my husband.
Most of the projects we tried so far don't work. And why? Nobody bothered to edit the book and to try the projects to make sure everything is right. Sometimes they have the code wrong, sometimes they forget to show all the connections that are needed. For example, project 22:- They list the wrong numbers in the code. A few pages later they do have the correct numbers, but I had to spend endless hours on the internet to figure them out.- The forgot to show that you need to connect a wire to the GND.- They don't show you where the - and + signs are on the breadboard.- The layout they have for the Arduino board has completely blurry inscriptions. My eyes hurt after trying to decipher what was written on their Arduino board, and mostly I was unable to tell.- Something else is wrong, as the project just doesn't work right (the motor spins all the time and pauses for a second when the correct code is pressed, instead of spinning only when the correct code is pressed. I've given up on trying to figure out why that happens. They have some cool projects in the book. But these can be found online for free, including codes. The reason I wanted the book is that we'd have a step by step fool-proof guide to cool projects. My son and I don't know much about Arduino and we still wanted to be able to built some cool projects. We weren't able to with this book, and my son lost his interest in Arduino.Very disappointed, and feel this is wasted money. Also note, most of the reviews of this book are by unverified reviewers. I think this speaks volumes.
This book is better than most introduction to Arduino books. It's fairly well illustrated, and clearly written. There's enough explanation of how it all works to teach you what you need to know, but doesn't force you to go too deep into electronics. You can go online and download all of the programming so you don't have to type it all in. That alone makes this a good book. The only fault that I found is that it doesn't have an index in the back of the book. If it did, this would earn an easy 5 stars.
Good handbook . Some projects are too simple but I can buuild 4 or 5 projects I can use.
Excellent with color images ! It even has key words in color !. Indentation is great. The only fault is in putting beginning curly brace at end of line instead of on next line. Putting ending curly brace on next line makes the code block much easier to see, especially with indentation. I can highly recommend this.
This is the perfect book for beginners who need pictures and a lot of explanations. I am going to use it in my 9th grade class next semester and will recommend my coworkers get copies as well. Thank you for finally making a book that the rest of us can understand and teach!
Good book. Good projects. Not a teaching manual, but it's not advertised as one either.
Clean, clear, easy to follow instructions. I've worked through a few and I already know a bit about Arduino.
Bought this as a gift for my cousin and he LOVES it. He started reading right away.
