I heard an interview on NPR (Fresh Air, I believe was the program) and purchased the book immediately.It was so much more than I anticipated it would be with regards to the information and depth of content provided. Although Mr.French speaks from his experience, it still has a feel of a well-rounded objective read. He provides answers and reasons about questions many of us ask about Africa - a continent whose countries are often ignore in the news/media and in elementary and secondary education. I know I will reference this book in the future, especially in school when writing future papers. I'm grateful it was brought to my attention and I've already referred it to others. This is a mind/perspective expanding work on a continent that deserves the attention.
A very insightful and informative account of a journalist's experiences covering critical events in West Africa during the 1990's. French's chronicle of Mobutu's downfall in Zaire is especially riveting. Heavy on the tragedy and light on hope, this is a book that forces its reader to confront and contemplate human suffering on a very large scale. It's not an easy read for that reason, although the writing is superb. Only two downsides: 1) Written in the late 1990's, it is a bit dated. French holds up Mali during the 1990's as a beacon of hope for the rest of Africa, when all I seem to hear today regarding Mali are reports of militant religious fundamentalism ravaging the nation. 2) While his analysis of the West's role in laying the foundation for tragedy and political unrest in Africa is quite persuasive, his suggestion that Mobutu wouldn't have been so evil had he not been following in King Leopold's footsteps struck me as a little paternalistic. In spite of those two things, the first of which is not the book's fault, I respect Howard French for his courage and intelligence, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in neocolonialism and its effects in Africa.
Africa is a continent that the west has ignored. French's volume provides an intimate introduction to some of the problems faced in Africa. More importantly, the book provides an outstanding critique of how the complacency of the west has contributed to the problems that Africa faces. Perhaps this volume will contribute to a more open and honest dialogue about the moral responsibility that Europe and the United States have to counter the exploitation of the continent. But what I like most about French's volume is that it is told from the first person perspective. You know his biases and his emotions. But you also know his commitment to seeing justice in Africa.An excellent book.
Few people in the West understand the impact of colonization on indigenous people. World powers drew lines between neighbors, and brought their conflicts to the continent to play out in proxy. The fragmentation of their lands will be healing for a long time.
Excellent documentation, and reads like a novel. The first-person style really puts you on the scene. A more accessible book than others on the same subject, where the overabundance of details and references make them confusing and tiresome.
This book, combined with "The Shadow of the Sun" by Ryszard Kapuscinski illuminates a part of the world that most Americans who think they follow current events well (like myself?) really don't know much about. I recommend reading the Kapuscinski book first as it will give you a better understanding of the events related in Mr. French's book. Both are excellent and worth reading to understand what happens in Africa.

Howard Frence done a great job of informing us on the history and challenges of the governmnts and people of Africa. Would recommend it to all who care to be educated.
